Description: Vintage Lord & Taylor Red Rose Cardboard Jewelry Gift BoxLord & Taylor, founded in 1826 by Samuel Lord & George Washington Taylor, had a long and storied history as one of America’s finest department stores. From its groundbreaking hiring of Dorothy Shaver as the first woman to head up a department store; to the iconic holiday windows which inspired Christmas awe and wonder in generations of New Yorkers, Lord & Taylor was indeed “The Signature of American Style” Sadly, it spent its final years of existence bouncing from owner to owner until the pandemic put the final nail in its coffin.During Lord & Taylor’s ownership by The May Department Stores Company from 1986 to 2005, the chain experienced exponential sales growth and expansion. While it had grown to 86 stores in markets far-flung from its New York roots, Lord & Taylor’s steady march from an upscale retailer to a more moderate and promotional store caused it to lose significant market share to high-end and other mid-tier stores.By the early 2000s, Lord & Taylor was considered too moderate to appeal to high-end shoppers and too “old” and uncool to appeal to the young hip shoppers it desperately needed. To find new relevance, Lord & Taylor, under the leadership of President & CEO Jane Elfers, embarked on a program to downsize and modernize the brand. While showing initial promise, the change in corporate ownership derailed Elfers's turnaround efforts, and the company began its death spiral.This (4 x 1-inch) gift box was used in the Jewelry and Accessories Departments. It features the classic script logo with Dorothy Shaver Rose. Based on the construction and design of the box, it is estimated to have been manufactured between 1989 to 1994. The gift box is in good to excellent overall condition.
