Description: VTG Carved Jadeite pendant of Goddess Mazu or Guan Yin (Kwan Yin) ~2 1/8" Tall (includes the height of the integrated jadeite bale) As I purchased this pendant in September 1988, it had to have been carved before then in 1988, or earlier. Figure most likely depicts one of these two: Mazu (Matsu, sea goddess) Guan Yin (Guanyin, Quan Yin, Kwan Yin) is the goddess of mercy and compassion. In Chinese Buddhism, Guan Yin is synonymous with the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the pinnacle of mercy, compassion, kindness and love. I've been told that the Chinese word at the back, 吉祥,ji xiang, means auspicious. In good to very good preowned vintage condition. Jadeite pendant has an integrated jadeite bale. Thus, it can be worn with a chain or cord of any color. Hand carved. Purchased at the Jade Market in Taipei, Taiwan in 1988. So, presumably, I am the original owner. My personal jeweler has confirmed the pendant is jadeite. When held up to light, the pendant is translucent. A lovely pendant. Refer to the photographs to see style, design, colors, size, condition etc. *Note: I have included two black and white photographs of the pendant as the contrast, I think, makes it slightly easier to see the design and the Chinese word on the rear. See photographs as to color, condition, style, size etc. Photographs are of the item listed and I am the photographer.
