Vintage Henry R. Swope H.R.S. No. 2 Electric Motor, for Fan, Steam Engine Acc...

Description: This auction is for a vintage bronze/copper and cast iron electric motor. It has a bronze plate on the top that says "H.R.S. No. 2." A little web research shows this to stand for the "Henry S. Swope" company out of Philadelphia. The 1905 date I got from a web listing for one of their other motors. I found a few listings for this one that called it a fan, toy, or model motor. Also found pictures for a #3 and a #4 motor from them. I like vintage mechanical things, but I don't know much about them or try to use them or fix them. So the following description is observational only: The base it is on seems like Bakelite. It measures a bit under 8" on the long side, 7" on the other. The black housing of the motor is magnetic, looks like cast iron. Other than the axle and the flywheel on the motor which are also magnetic, everything else is non-magnetic - so either copper or bronze. There are two posts on the side. You unscrew them, put in your two wires, screw them down. On the underside of the base you can see these are attached to wires that run in little channels to the motor. I used a 9-volt, didn't work. The brace thing in front: the cannister with the piston in it. It rotates on its axle and the piston can move up and down in side the cannister. It did not occur to me till I was writing this that the cap unscrewed. Those are pictures 6 and 7. The piston has a plunger on the bottom, looks like rubber between two copper plates. 2 little vent holes in the top of the lid. Bottom of the cylinder a hole that leads to that spigot looking pipe. That has a cap that also unscrews. I thought that black thing in there was a sponge, or a filter, or a ball bearing - but it was/is dried oil - I poked it with a tooth pick and it broke into pieces, I left that in there. I think that thing is an oiler. The flywheel thing it is attached to - no idea. Diameter of flywheel is 2.75". Lines up to be belt driven by the wheel off the motor. Something slotted into the revolving plate on the other end of the flywheel axle. Motor itself: Not much to say. 4.25" tall to top of plaque. 4" wide across the cast iron feet. Big coil of green wound wire on the bottom, coiled onto a reddish spool that looks like super hard rubber, but not metal. Inside lots of stuff spins when you turn the wheel. Coolest thing is that flat copper band at the back, attached to that frame and it has it's contact on the flat big copper wheel that spins. There's a wire hookup on the end of the arm that holds the band - ground maybe? Very heavy, weighs almost 6 pounds as it sits there. You'll notice in the photo's above that I used the flash to try and show the condition of the insides of the motor. In the last picture I show this piece with some composition toy soldier engineers - the tallest one is about 3" tall. The engineers are not included in this auction, they are shown for size comparison only. In a group of multiple pieces each item is wrapped individually. Original boxes or other original paper item go into a plastic bag in case you get delivery on a rainy day.
