Vintage Henriette Woessner Signed Mt. Rainier Mixed Media Collage

Description: Found at an estate sale, this arresting vintage 7.5" x 17" framed mixed media collage by noted Seattle artist and gallery owner Henriette Woessman (1905-1997) is entitled "The Mountain". It shows a dramatic view of Mt. Rainier from somewhere near Indian Henry's Hunting Ground. It's on illustration board and makes use of wisps of paper to give it a textured and slightly three-dimensional appearance. As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the age or history of this marvelous collage, which is framed in a 14.25"x22.25"x0.75" contemporary aluminum channel frame. I'd guess it to be at least 30 years old. The mat is slightly foxed (see photos). I removed the collage from its frame so I could clean the underside of the glass, which had gotten a little dusty over the years, and then replaced it. That also permitted me to take photographs of it without reflections. This framed collage weighs 4 lb. 8 oz. Henriette Woessman and her husband Frank were important figures in the Northwest art and photography scene in the 1950's and 60's both because of their own work and because of their art gallery, the Woessman Gallery, at Alki Beach in West Seattle. According to her December 31, 1997, obituary in The Seattle Times, the gallery displayed the works of Kenneth Callahan, Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, and George Tsutakawa, among others.
