Description: Fabulous piece of weaving and work or art that would make an excellent addition to a collection of South American indigenous fabrics. Hand woven, possibly by the Quechua people, in the central of southern highlands of Peru, circa 1950. Judging by its condition this piece of fabric was probably originally in use as a shawl. The decorative central band is made up of traditional motifs of mainly animals. The weaving of the motifs is technically uses complementary weft weave (the mirror image is on the reverse). Extremely fine weaving, woven in 2 parts, probably on a portable back strap loom, and joined using Cretan stitch. This piece of fabric would have taken a considerable amount of time to create by a very skilled weaver. Measuring 107 cm by 100 cm (42 inches by 40 inches) and in good condition for its age with 1 small hole, a couple of stains and pin holes to the corners where it has been hung. Recently professionally cleaned. I am reducing my collection of fabrics as I have downsized and no longer have room to display all of my favourite pieces, of which this is one. I can't see the point of putting things of beauty in storage so it is time to part with some and pass on to a new custodian. Please see my listings for other fabrics. I am happy to combine postage and do not profit from this. Please feel free to ask questions and thank you for looking.
