Description: Vintage Haldenwanger Berlin (West Germany) Laboratory White Mortar & Pestle Wilhem Haldenwanger founded his eponymous porcelain manufactory in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany in 1865. The company began producing porcelain for medical applications, such as apothecary jars and crockery. Their products were called "technical ceramics". The company survived for 150 years before finally sold. Mortars are bowl-shaped containers and pestles are heavy, rod-shaped tools. Haldenwanger™ Porcelain Spouted Mortars were constructed from optimized laboratory white porcelain. The porcelain is very thick. They were used mainly to grind and crush substances into fine powders or pastes. Each size was numbered on the green logo that is visible on the side of each piece. This mortar is numbered 55 and 4, while the pestle is numbered 36 and 4. The interior or the bowl is not glazed and the round base of the pestle is not glazed so that items could be easily crushed. The bowl has a spout for easy pouring. The condition of this set is considered by collectors to be very good. No crazing or chips/cracks. There are some stain spots on the interior of the bowl/mortar. The pestle is also in very good condition with no crazing, chips or cracks; a tiny stain spot is visible on the rounded base. Functional today in the kitchen to crush dried herbs, garlic and spices.
