Description: This sculpture was created by Lupapa in 1970 in a Makonde collective of on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There Mozambican and Tanzanian wood carvers gathered to work out their ideas and narratives, using very simple hand tools to shape the hard East African ebony wood known as mpingo. The tree-of-life style, one of several utilized by the Makonde artists, captures the essence of 'Ujamaa - the concept of family-hood as the basis of a strong African society unity that became the foundation of the political philosophy of the then recently independent Tanzania. This work has had only one owner since it was obtained directly from the artist in 1970. Seller's photos. Note: The sculpture is closer to 10" x 12" near the top. The 14" x 14" temporary base is optional. Free shipping to contiguous states of USA. [ Inventory no. 160 DH233_Nyumbani ]
