Description: In 1976 in a Bar in Pasadena, California, Home of the venerable Rose Parade, a group of Locals were lamenting that there would be no Rose Parade on New Years Day 1977, due to a 100+ year rule that the Rose Parade never takes place on a Sunday. Out of respect to Pasadena Pastors and their churches, back in 1890, they would have the parade on the Monday following, so in '77 the Rose Parade was scheduled for January 2nd. This did not sit well with the well fueled patrons of Hazel's Bar, who held dear the tradition of partying New Years Eve out on the Colorado Blvd. parade route and having a parade New Year's morning. So they decided to have a parade anyway on New Years. Thus was born the First Occasional Doo Dah Parade. Over just a few blocks in Pasadena was staged an irreverent, fun, crazy, creative, kind of Mock (but tribute to) Rose Parade. In subsequent years they obviously had to move the "Occasional" Doo Dah Parade to a few days before New Years. The classic early Doo Dah Parades featured groups marching like: the Toro, Toro, Toro Brigade ( 20 - 30 guys in Khakis and Pith helmets pushing running Toro lawnmowers down Colorado Blvd. going through various formations), the Businessman Brigade (A group of guys in suits carrying briefcases down the street all in formation also marching forming various patterns like a marching band), the famous two local bar flies in an old Chevy with the car full of empty beer cans up to their shoulders, the Doo Dah Queen was the middle aged Hazel (owner of Hazel's Bar), and of course local Bar Band Snotty Scotty and the Hankies on a flat bed truck playing throughout. All in great fun. The parade has been moved again to around Thanksgiving, and has become more commercialized and less fun, but goes on. This rare poster, 11 x 14 inches. was from the early 6th Occasional Doo Dah Parade in 1982, still in good shape.
