Description: VINTAGE Depression Era La Crosse Bottling Works NRA National Recovery Act Crate. La crosse bottling works la crosse Wisconsin This paint stencil was made to label beer barrels at the La Crosse Bottling Works. The La Crosse Bottling Works Inc. was established in 1868 and bottled more than just beer. The company made and bottled sodas, mineral water, beer, porter, and medicine. By the 1920's the company was one of the three plants owned by the G. Heileman Brewing Co. Gottlieb Heileman came to La Crosse in 1857 and first worked as a foreman in other city breweries before joining John Gund in the founding of the City Brewery. It wasn't until years after his death that his wife incorporated the brewery in 1890 under the name G. Heileman Brewing Company that we know today. The company prospered and grew to own three bottling facilities in the city: the La Crosse Bottling Works, the North Side Bottling Works, and Riverside Bottling Works.
