We are delighted to offer Vintage Cuban Revolution Print #2, which is part of a portfolio of 40 original woodcut prints that was displayed at a 1961 exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana). The woodcuts in this portfolio were created by Cuba's Consejo Nacional de Cultura (National Culture Council) to illustrate the main points of Fidel Castro's fiery September 2, 1960 "Declaration of Havana" speech that served as a manifesto of the new revolution. In his speech before a huge crowd in Havana's main square, the Cuban leader harshly denounced the United States and praised Cuba's new allies: the Soviet Union and People's Republic of China. Castro left no doubt in his speech that, in spite of earlier denials, he was transforming Cuba into a one-party, communist state, which it remains today. The original woodcut in this listing was designed by Atilano Armenteros Ramos (1907-1982), who in his distinguished career won 33 awards as a painter, sculptor and graphic artist. This hard-to-find graphic, which measures 14 by 19 inches (35 x 48 cm), focuses on a portion of Fidel Castro’s 1960 speech that expressed Cuba’s solidarity with persecuted people in the United States, including African Americans, intellectuals and workers under the control of gangsters. An image of three lynched black people dominates the upper part of the graphic.
