Description: Two vintage Chouinard Zero X Axes, 55 cm. Pre-owned. - Plus four additional picks, TWO OF WHICH ARE UNUSED! The two unused picks include one hard-to-find Classical (Alpine) Pick and one Reverse Curve Pick. - Two unused original lock nuts and bolts for the unused picks. - Chouinard wrench. I am the original owner of these and I bought both of these as 55 cm axes, but as you can see they differ slightly in length. Back when these were made, crafting the shaft was a hand-made process that was not always exact and neither of them are actually 55 cm: on the ferrule of each a tiny number is stamped to show the actual length - the shorter has the number "52" stamped and the longer has the number "4" stamped. The shaft of the "52" has stains from where I had grip tape on it over the years, but even though it left stains, it also protected the shaft from any major dings and scratches. The "52" is much cleaner as I did not use it as much (as many climbers did back then, I climbed with a longer axe and a shorter hammer.) It also has no major dings or gouges. The Chouinard catalog (see last photo) said these tools have "The swing of a fly rod, the durability of a Panzer tank," and that "Anything more is less. The perfect axe for extreme terrain with an adze for chopping belay stances." (Although I can't say that I have seen anyone chopping any belay stances lately.) Marketing hype aside, these are solid tools that stand the test of time.A valuable addition to any collection, and you can still actually climb with them!
