The compass is dry on the inside. These were normally filled with an ethanol/water solution to dampen the compass card's movement. The compass card rotates freely and does indeed point to magnetic north.Made by the Baker Compass Company of Boston, Massachusetts.Perfect as a nautical item display as-is, or could be a great restoration project!
