Description: Item features solid wood construction, beautiful wood grain, distressed red finish, nicely carved details, 2 swing doors, 2 drawers, hidden compartment, solid brass hardware, very nice antique item, circa late 19th-early 20th century. Measurements: 60.5" H X 49" W X 21" D. This 19th century red lacquer cabinet is called a “Wedding Cabinet. ” In ancient China, these were made as dowries by families of brides, with their sizes and embellishments an indication of the fathers’ wealth and social standing. They were painted red to symbolize good luck and prosperity. This tall cabinet was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with Ming dynasty simplicity: the simple elegance of its straight lines and minimal decorations. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: the two large, easily removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and the tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue nails or other mechanical joining device. The doors feature a large, round bronze face-plate with decorative floral etching around its perimeter and etched bronze pulls that open to reveal great storage possibilities.
