A bad arm forced Schacht off the mound in 1921, but he stayed with the Senators as third- base coach and developed what became baseball's first clown act.It was Al Schacht, a half-century before the advent of the San Diego Chicken, the Phillies Phanatic and the rest of today's oversized comic mascots, who thought up baseball's first comic pantomime routines.
