Sister Anne Marie (Ann Neville Blakemore),was born August 20, 1929 in New York.Her family moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1938. Quoted: "This work is an expression of beauty, and truebeauty is of God," she says. "Unfortunately, beauty hasbecome separated from religion, and is sometimes associatedwith evil. For me personally, beauty is the gateway into God.Maybe that's one of the messages my work tries to convey." "A drawing is a revelation," she explains in one statement."It is a small cosmos. Sister received a BA in Fine Arts from theUniversity of Richmond in 1951. She studiedtwo years in Europe, one with Andre L'Hote in Paris,the second at the Chelsea School of Fine Arts in London.She returned to the USA and studied one year withHans Hofman in New York and in Provincetown. Sheexhibited in a group show in Provincetown. She movedto California in 1956 and exhibited two shows at theMuseum of Modern Art in San Francisco, winning a prizethe same year. Sister was received into the Catholic Churchin 1956 and entered the Carmelite Monastery on July 15, 1959and made it her solemn profession on July 16, 1965. In the monastery Sister served in many capacities: assistantnovice mistress, sacristan, maintenance sister, garden sister,House printer, designer and sewer of liturgical vestments, shewas a bee keeper and she loved to do pottery. She continuedher artwork and was a creative thinker and writer. A printed bio of this artist is included for your reference. Weighs 2 pounds 13 ounces.
