Description: This listing is a rare great collectible piece for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan. It is a large 14 1/2 inch x 26 inch single calendar page of Notre Dame's great two-time All-American (1952, 1953), two-time Maxwell Award winner (1952, 1953), and Heisman Trophy winner (1953) Johnny Lattner. This large 1957 calendar page (September) was distributed 67 years ago by well-known Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota, who excelled in their beautiful art work. This individual page was taken from a large wall calendar featuring Great Moments in Sports. While the entire page measures 14.5 inches by 26 inches, the art work featuring John Lattner measures 14 1/2 inches by 14 1/2 inches. The verbiage under the art work of John Lattner states the following: Notre Dame's history includes many famous names of the gridiron, but it is doubtful that anyone will replace John Lattner on that list of stars. There were many great days in Lattner's career but among those which stand out were two tremendous touchdown runs in 1953, his senior year. Against inspired Purdue, the Irish led by a narrow 10-7 count. The Boilermakers, having scored, kicked off to Lattner. He straight-armed and fought his way into the clear and outran the Purdue team. It was an 86-yard payoff dash. And against Pennsylvania the Irish trailed by a touchdown as the Quakers kicked off. Lattner gathered the ball in and rambled 92 yards to knot the score. He returned another kick-off 52 yards, a punt 32 yards, setting up touchdowns, and killed Penn's last attempt with a pass interception. This indeed was his "Great Moment in Sports." On November 9, 1953, Lattner appeared on the cover of Time magazine with the caption "a bread and butter ball carrier", a phrase bestowed upon Lattner by his Notre Dame Head Coach, the legendary Frank Leahy. In 1954, Lattner was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but played with them for only one season before entering the United States Air Force for two years. There, during a football game, Johnny suffered a severe knee injury that prevented him from ever playing professional football again. Even Lattner's single season in Pittsburgh was a success, as he totaled over 1,000 all purpose yards on offense and special teams. As a result, he was named to the NFL 1954 Pro Bowl as a kick and punt returner. This vintage 1957 calendar page is a rare, unique, and handsomely colored piece of sports memorabilia that any fan of college football and the Fighting Irish would love to add to their collection. However, I highly recommend the winning bidder to seriously consider having the entire page framed. Framed, it would be a knock-out piece for someone, it would protect it from harm, and it would enhance its value greatly. Thank you for viewing my EBAY auction item. (Please note: I do not ship internationally.) God bless.
