Charles Leonard Gehringer, nicknamed "The Mechanical Man",was an American professional baseball second baseman, who played in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers for 19 seasons (1924–1942).Widely regarded as one of the greatest second basemen of all time,Gehringer compiled a .320 batting average and had seven seasons with more than 200 hits.Perhaps the greatest 2-way player of all-time Gehringer was the first MLB middle infielder to turn 100 DPs in 6 seasons. In the 1930s, Babe Ruth called Gehringer "the greatest player in the game" and Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Mel Ott were all in their prime.Gehringer had career totals of 2,839 hits and 574 doubles.
