The program was established in 1965 to provide security and support to rural villages in South Vietnam. Under the program, Marine Corps infantry squads were paired with South Vietnamese Popular Force platoons to live and work together in the villages. The USMC program's motto, "More Than We Promised" referred to the Marines' commitment to providing more than just security to the villages. In addition to providing protection from the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army, the Marines in the program also worked to improve living conditions in the villages by providing medical care, building schools and clinics, and helping with infrastructure projects.One notable example of the program's success was in the village of Ban Namm Khem, located near the Rose Garden in Thailand. The Marines assigned to the village, together with their South Vietnamese counterparts, worked to build a school, dig wells, and provide medical care to the villagers.
