Model: M5A1 >--> Condition: Good - Very Good Blade Length: 6.50" TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a Vietnam War era M1 Garand self loading rifle Milpar M5A1 knife bayonet and Danish wood grain pattern scabbard. After WWII, the U.S. Army wanted to develop a smaller better bayonet for their M1 Garands. They wanted something less expensive, easy to make, but still functional. The M5A1 was approved 1956. There were several manufacturers that made the bayonet, Imperial Knife, Aerial Cutlery, Columbia Milpar, J&D Tool and Utica Cutlery. Germany and Korea also made bayonets for the United States. This was made by Columbus Milpar in the US and the scabbard was made in Denmark. Approximately 1.5 million M5 and M5A1 bayonets were made for the M1 Garand. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. There are light impact marks, scrapes and erosion. The remaining finish has started to turn a plum patina color. The two (2x) grip panels are securely fastened to the tang. The flat head screws have light oxidation and the slots are mostly strong. The grip panel checkering is distinct with no notable wear, except for some scuffs at the back near the pommel. The spine and sides have impact marks, erosion and scrapes. The blade edge has no nicks or dings, but there is light erosion near it. It has its original factory edge and has not been sharpened. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade finish has turned a darker patina color. The top of the guard is marked "U.S. M5A1 / MILPAR COL". The Danish scabbard is in Good - Very Good condition. The belt hook hanger is securely fastened and mostly retains its original shape. It has scattered oxidation. The retaining strap is securely fastened and the snap is functional. Also, the metal hardware has oxidized. The frog webbing has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There is some grit on the webbing. It is securely attached to the metal locket. It has some light handling marks and scattered light oxidation. The coloring has started to turn a plum patina color. The plastic body composite looks like a wood grain pattern. It has light handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. The original finish is intact. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
