Model: M5A1 >--> Condition: Good - Very Good Blade Length: 6.50" TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a Vietnam War era M1 Garand self loading rifle Milpar M5A1 knife bayonet and scabbard. After WWII, the U.S. Army wanted to develop a smaller better bayonet for their M1 Garands. They wanted something less expensive, easy to make, but still functional. The M5A1 was approved 1956. There were several manufacturers that made the bayonet, Imperial Knife, Aerial Cutlery, Columbia Milpar, J&D Tool and Utica Cutlery. Germany and Korea also made bayonets for the United States. This was made by Columbus Milpar. Approximately 1.5 million M5 and M5A1 bayonets were made for the M1 Garand. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The pommel is securely fastened to the tang. The guard is securely fastened but has a light wiggle. There are light impact marks, scrapes and oxidation. The remaining finish has started to turn a darker patina color. The two (2x) grip panels are securely fastened to the tang. The flat head screws have light oxidation and the slots are strong. The grip panel checkering is distinct with no notable wear. The spine and sides have impact marks and scrapes. There is a little bit of scattered pitting. The blade edge has no nicks or dings. It has its original factory edge and has not been sharpened. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade finish has turned a darker patina color. The top of the guard is marked "U.S. M5A1 / MILPAR COL". The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, due to the oxidation. The canvas belt hoop is intact and functional. The retaining strap is securely fastened and the snap is functional, however it is fairly stiff. Also, the metal hardware has oxidized. The frog webbing has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. It is securely attached to the metal locket. It has been painted and there are scratches. The plastic body has scattered scrapes. Most of the original finish is intact. The locket is marked, but it is hard to read because it was painted over, what is visible is "M8". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
