Description: Incredible Extremely Rare Victorian Edwardian Unusually Long 14K Gold Amethyst Sloan & Co. Hat Pin ! Fully hallmarked 14K and the makers insignia mark for Sloan & Co. which operated in New York and Newark NJ. Weighs approximately 8 grams. Approximately 21.3 cm (8 5.5/16 inches) in total length ! With the top 2.39 cm (14.5/16 of an inch) from the beginning of the expanded gold prior to gold ball to tip of faceted Amethyst top, and the Amethyst is approximately 1.28 cm (1/2 of an inch) at its widest section. Faceted stones and crystals have become very popular again in the beginning of the 2000s but they are mass produced machine made thus boring since no talent was required whereas with these Victorian Edwardian ones such as this one are painstakingly and masterly hand carved with more primitive machines thus incredible skill, beauty and charm. According to Greek mythology Amethyst was a young virgin who became the wrath of the Greek God Dionysus while intoxicated with red wine, she cried out to the Goddess Diana for help who turned her into a white shimmering stone, and when Dionysus realized what he had done his tears mixed with his red wine and then his goblet overturned poured onto the white stone giving us Amethyst. The stone is associated with intelligence and control over evil thoughts and thought to bring the highest aspirations while warding off being under the influence, very cool stone bringing about clm and bravery. Amethyst associated with the month of February are the birthstone for Aquarius (February 19 to January 19). Is Amethyst your birthstone ?!
