Description: Victoria Schmidt Austria Sugar Bowl w/Lid 2 Handled 1918-1939 Floral Gold Exquisite Decorative Victoria Schmidt COVERED SUGAR w/2 Handles, Large FLORAL SPRAYS, from Stara Role, Czecho-Slovakia in 1918-1939 DESCRIPTION: This is a beautiful 2 handled sugar bowl w/lid. The sugar has the cutest little circular handle on its lid. The rims and handles are trimmed gold. The floral sprays are bright and cheerfully multi-colored on the high white porcelain. CONDITION: The condition of this decorative sugar is superb, even though it is classified as used. This would make great display set or a functional set to use everyday. We can find no manufacturing defects. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches, rubbings or hairlines. There is age appropriate wear to the gold on all handles. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is. DIMENSIONS: The sugar has a diameter of 3 7/8" and a height of 4 1/4" to the top of the lid. Handle to handle, the measurement is 5 1/4". HISTORY/MARKS: Importers Lazarus and Rosenfeld Ltd. based in London, with showrooms in NYC, Australia & South Africa founded in 1883 the Victoria Porzellanfabrik in a suburb of Carlsbad in Altrohlau, Bohemia, Austria. Two years later in 1885, this factory was sold to Frank Schmidt and the name changed to Porzellanfabrik Victoria Schmidt & Co.. Under whose guidance, it became the largest factory in the famed Carlsbad porcelain district. The choice of location was no accident due to the entire region being in the Ore Mountains which is the home of many Kaolin mines. Kaolin is an essential ingredient for the manufacturing of high quality hard paste porcelain. Production concentrated on fine quality decorative household and hotel porcelain. Marshal Fields Department Store was their major US importer, allowing "Victoria" Schmidt & Co. to employ 975 workers by 1900. (Though the location did not change, the country’s name did to Czecho-Slovakia and now Czech Republic.) In 1927, it was transformed into a stock company and renamed Porzellanfabrik Victoria AG. Later in 1945, the factory together with Altrohlau Porcelain Company became part of the state owned EPIAG and renamed Starorolsky Porcelan. By 1958, the name was Karlovarsky Porcelan Stara Role II and and presently it is part of Thun Karlovarsky Porcelan. The mark used on this piece is from the 1918-1939 time period. This mark is cited in Dr. James D. Henderson’s Bohemian Decorated Porcelain on page 44. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
