Description: Macmillan & Co, London, 1890. Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fine. First Edition thus. Preface by Austin Dobson. Crown 8vo (179 x 115mm): xxiv,[2],305,[7]pp, with 182 illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Publisher's dark green cloth and end papers, gilt lettering and vignettes to spine and upper cover, all edges gilt. A blorious example, almost pristine. (& is the first issue with the, later suppressed, illustration on p.95 of girl sitting on a mans' back) The only flaws are the lower right front cover is sl. rubbed & bumped, & a small amount of foxing on fore & aft few pages & intermittently throughout although not excessive; pages are tightly bound throughout. Very small & neat owner's name on top of inner page to f.f.e.p.. Macmillan's late nineteenth-century reprints of classic tales illustrated by fine artists came to be known as the Cranford Series, after Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford, illustrated by H.T. and published in 1891. The series ran from 1876 (Old Christmas) to 1907 (Silas Marner), and includes 24 crown octavo volumes, instantly recognizable by their distinctive dark green shiny cloth bindings with rich gilt pictorial designs on front cover and spines and all edges gilt. This copy from a small, choice, library collection from an elderly lady.. Sold by an independent and solo ex-bookshop owner, with around 50 years of experience, who takes pride in listing and researching every volume. Someone who does not consider books as mere square objects with printing inside, fixed only on selling in high quantities as quickly as possible, but one who takes deep interest not only in the book itself, but also, where possible, its history. No "maybe's" or "may not contain's", well packed for protection & never sent in wrappers only suitable for newspapers as some others seem to do. I am open to sensible offers on all my listings, and I am also happy to combine postage on multiple orders - please enquire before ordering. NB. even 1 grm over 2kgs doubles the cost . Over 5kgs best in 2 packages (if possible), o/w via Courier.
