Description: This is a dramatic medal, or plaquette, for veteran’s charities, in Austria–Hungary, during WW 1. I’m guessing this would have been awarded to people who donated during the years 1914-1916, while Franz Joseph was alive. Although the sculpting style is such that details are only partially fleshed out, the full dramatic impact comes through. The one side has a woman, her child at her side, giving to a family (of 3 generations) in need. Perhaps her husband is fighting in the war. On the other side is a finely done portrait of Franz Joseph, before he died. The sculptor, H. Kautsch, signed it on the portrait side. This fine piece is 2 3/8” x 1 ½”. I do not know what metal this is. Although possibly out of focus, I included the last 2 pics, because they best represent the truer color of the piece. For condition, please closely study the pics with the “zoom” feature GREAT HISTORY !! GREAT ART !! GREAT MEDAL !!
