Description: Gatcombe Antiques An extremely large Georgian sarcophagus shaped, solid flamed mahogany tea caddy, with original blown-glass mixing bowl, and original brass lock with an old key adapted to work. The glass brass mixing bowl sits within a central reservoir, with a removable tea canister on either side. They each have a brass hinged lid, with remnants of the original foil lining in the interior. The right-hand side one has had some restoration to the sides of the lid and is again in good order. The mixing bowl is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips, and a pontil mark to the base. The lock and key work well but are slightly idiosyncratic: When locking it, it needs a gentle push down on the top, and when unlocking it, turn the key fully clockwise as far as it will go. Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. Very good patination and colour. One curious thought occurred to me: This is the largest tea caddy I've come across from this period. Tea was still relatively expensive at this time and therefore tea caddies were quite small compared with their Victorian counterparts, because of the price of tea becoming considerably cheaper. A tea caddy of this size could well have belonged to a large home such as a manor house! Measurements: 42 cm wide, 27.5 cm deep, and 19 cm high. Aftercare: Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Occasionally wipe over with a soft cloth. From time to time, use a spray furniture polish containing bees wax, to maintain its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the waxed surface. Please get in touch if you have any questions. I also have other items that might be of interest, for sale in my eBay shop.
