But with the exception of Columbia (now Sony), no American company has a longer history than RCA Victor (now BMG). This multi-volume set, "Nipper's Greatest Hits: 1901-1920" cherry picks and highlights the best-selling records from all the decades in its long history. Starting at the turn of the century, the earliest entries are John Philip Sousa's Band's "In the Good Old Summertime" from 1905 and George M. Cohan's "Grand Old Rag" by Billy Murray from 1906. The standards "Shine On, Harvest Moon" (sung here by Miss Walton & Mister MacDonough) and Len Spencer's "The Arkansas Traveler" are from 1908, while the following year saw the release of Ada Jones' "Yama Yama Man" and Billy Murray returning with "In My Merry Oldsmobile" and also dueting with Miss Jones on "Come Josephine in My Flying Machine". Al Jolson also started his recording career with Victor, and his "That Haunting Melody" from 1911 was his first hit. Nora Bayes is represented here by two of her biggest numbers, "Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly?" and a duet with "Mister Moon Man, Turn Off the Light". By 1918, America was in the throes of the First World War, and even Enrico Caruso joined the fray with George M. Cohan's "Over There". But the jazz age was starting to rear its head, and selections from the decade's end, like John Steel's "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody", Ben Selvin's "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's "Tiger Rag" all pointed to the decade to come. Given that some of these tracks are 100-plus years old, the CEDAR restoration used on these battered old '78s is amazing, preserving a time in our history long since gone, but not forgotten.
