Description: One of Hiroshige Ando's works, 100 Famous Views of Edo. This is a print by Eikichi Uoya, a ukiyo-e publisher from the late Edo period. Atagoyama was located near present-day Toranomon 1-chome. The bamboo in the foreground was planted to ward off evil spirits, in honor of Kato Kiyomasa's killing of a tiger. Currently, the Sakuragawa River in the foreground has become a culvert and no longer exists. On a day when it was snowing deeply, Hiroshige drew a picture looking south, using the bamboo at the entrance to Yabukoji as a frame. The dark blue of the Sakuragawa River, which used to flow under Atago, and the red of the main gate of Atago Shrine add accents to the painting. Standing across the river is the guard house next to the front gate of the Kato mansion. People carrying white umbrellas walk towards Atago Shrine, being careful where they step. Were the sparrows flying around surprised by the snow suddenly falling with a thud? This is an emotional photo that conveys that kind of tranquility.
