Description: This neat, uncommon cover was sent on April 12, between 1876-1879, from Newport, Rhode Island(home of an important, U.S. Navy base!), to Lt. Raymond Perry Rodgers, U.S. Navy, Navy Pay Office, San Francisco, California! As for Lt. Rodgers, he eventually attained the rank of rear admiral in 1908! Then-Lieutenant Rodgers was then serving aboard the U.S.S. Pensacola(sometimes served as the flagship) then operating with the Pacific Squadron! The U.S.S. Pensacola, a screw steamer, was launched in 1859. To continue, the green, 3-Cent U.S., "Washington," definitive used to send the mail is in very fine condition! The fancy and CDS cancels from the Newport P.O. are quite fine! Lastly, as for the condition of the envelope, it's in good-very good condition. It is quite clean! The partially-repaired, back flap is 85-90% complete. It was opened somewhat roughly at the right side, causing some tears(3 or so; visible at the left side of the back), and reducing the envelope a bit. Noted imperfections aside, this remains a nifty example of mail to the future Rear Admiral Raymond Perry Rodgers, then serving as a lieutenant on the, U.S.S. Pensacola!
