Description: USS NORTH CAROLINA BB-55 USN Battleship first day cover with a postmark on Feb 9, 2018 from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Color photo cachet #1530 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with a 50 cent flag stamp and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1945. This 728 foot NC Class battleship was built at the NY Naval Shipyard. She was launched on 13 June 1940 and commissioned on 9 April 1941. She had nine 16 inch guns, twenty five inch guns, fifteen 40mm anti-aircraft guns and 48 20mm anti-aircraft cannons. The ship carried three Vought OS-2U Kingfisher float-planes for recon and rescue operations. The proud vessel reported to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in July 1942, and started her three year battle with the enemy in the Pacific Theater, earning fifteen WW II Battle Stars. She was operating primarily as an anti-aircraft platform escort for the carriers and a bombardment ship attacking close-in shore battles.
