Description: Nice original 17" x 14" photo of U.S.S. Mahan DD-364, probably during sea trials, 1936. On 7 December 1944 (three years to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor), Mahan was struck by three direct Japanese kamikaze hits near Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines. The damage was so severe that Mahan, after evacuating survivors, was sunk by torpedoes and gunfire from U.S. destroyers. U.S.S . Mahan earned five battle stars in WWII. The upper left corner of this photo reads: Compliments of Barnhart, Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy. Age related edge wear to his photo is visible in the first listing photo.
