Description: Created by the crew of USS Long Beach (CGN-9) to commemorate the Westpac 1969-1970 cruise, this new copy of the U.S. Naval history cruise book was stored by the publisher for over 45 years and never previously distributed. Navy cruise books are valuable military memorabilia - why purchase a scanned reproduction of a used copy of this Guided Missile Nuclear Cruiser when you can be the original owner of collectible Navy memorabilia? Pages are clean and unmarked. There may be slight darkening on the edges of the paper, discoloration or minor scuff marks to the cover and dust jacket. This WESTPAC Vietnam era Navy cruise book is a record for sailors and their families to document and better understand life aboard ship during challenging times. The USS Long Beach cruise book includes group portraits of the crew, photos from ports of call such as Hawaii, Subic Bay, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Philippines, and Bangkok, and Maureen Reagan in an on-board USO show during Ronald Reagan's term as governor of California. USS Long Beach (CLGN-160/CGN-160/CGN-9) was a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser, the only ship of her class, the first nuclear power surface warship in history. Long Beach was decommissioned on 1 May 1995 instead of receiving her third nuclear refueling and proposed upgrade. What remained of the hull, after the superstructure had been removed and the ship defueled, was sold for scrap in 2012 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. PLEASE NOTE: The image inside says "Westpac 68-69." Back of dust jacket correctly states 1969-1970. Allen Follow Lawrence Allen was born on the Pechanga Reservation where his mother taught school, and now resides in the Pacific Northwest. In between he experienced a varied and colorful life, living in and traveling to many corners of the world. Mr. Allen was born with a scientific and creative bent bursting out of his head, often expressed through writing and photography even as a child. In his 20s, he formed a publishing company and started writing, photographing and producing a variety of documentary subjects and other creative designs. One of the most intense challenges was working with crews on the Navy ships heading to Westpac deployment during the Vietnam War era. He and his staff became a one-stop-shop for writing, photographing, design/layout, editing and publishing of the cruise books, often in close collaboration with the ships' cruise book teams. A book for NASA called "Man's Greatest Adventure" was born from his work on the cruise books for several Apollo recovery missions. When the Vietnam era finally ended, he moved from Anaheim, California and continued to produce coffee table books such as the three volumes on the building of the Trans Alaska Pipeline, a book titled Coal A Contemporary Energy Source for Coal Age Magazine, and The Winemakers of the Pacific Northwest, all currently out of print. These days Lawrence Allen is trying to wind down his busy schedule to enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest (when it's not raining too much). His writing today is focused more on personal interest and introspection. Borrowed from an Amazon posting description of the same book.
