Description: ROLAND KIRK: the inflated tear. Used audiophile LP reissue “CSG Stereo” in Mint/Mint condition. Atlantic Records Catalog # SC 1502; 1968 release; reissue c. 2010? Condition: Beautiful heavyweight vinyl (might be 180 grams, but I can’t swear to that), played once by me. Packaging essentially as it was day it left pressing plant. Original high quality paper inner sleeve included. Comes in the original vinyl outer protective sleeve, with original price stated. As to the somewhat mysterious “CSG” process that supposedly improved the sound, I’m afraid I can’t really shed any light on that. Behind the Music: First, the hilarious true story of why I bought this reissue. I was writing a screenplay about ‘Rahsaan’ Roland Kirk, a movie that will never get made because I don’t “have an uncle who works in Hollywood.” I thought that the CD version of this classic album had only a truncated version of Kirk’s own notes for the project, so when I saw this reissue in a Providence, RI record store (remember them?), I bought it for $20.00 for the sake of getting the complete notes on back of LP jacket. As fate would have it, I subsequently discovered that the CD version did have the complete Kirk essay. A nice little cosmic joke on me! I can’t let this item go for less than what I paid, given its superb condition. With that out of the way, what can I say about Roland Kirk (1935-1977)? I could wax rhapsodic for a few thousand words, but I’ll spare you that. In my decades of radio broadcasting of Jazz, I always strove to keep his legacy alive in the ears and minds of listeners. He was more than just a technically astounding musician, he was an amazing human being. Despite “not being able to see real good”—his own description of having been blind since childhood—he stayed very well informed about current events in the world (which he called, especially the USA, “Plantation Earth”) and made often very funny commentary between musical selections in his legendary live recording sessions. I was blessed to experience the man in the flesh at the Village Vanguard in NYC in 1973 or ’74. A truly memorable evening. About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often! PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely. FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
