Description: Uruguay: Medal for Yatay 1865, Type 2. Bronze medal awarded to soldiers of Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina that participated in the battle of Yatay, 17 August 1865, during the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay (see Ross, Robert L. and Stahl, Alan M. From a Thankful Nation: Latin American Medals & Orders in the Robert L. Ross Collection Princeton University (2014) Uy6, pp. 657-659; see also Gillingham, Harrold E. South American Decorations and War Medals (1932; 1970 reprint) pp. 164-165). The battle was a crushing defeat for Paraguay, which suffered ca. 1,700 killed, 300 wounded and 1,200 captured; the allies had only 147 killed and 460 wounded. The medal was awarded in gold to generals, silver to officers and bronze to enlisted troops. This medal is the thin planchet (2 mm thick) type 2 variety, with a different style of “J” on the reverse side at the 6 o’clock position, and barely a trace of a “V”; also, the letters “OS” in “AGOSTO” were weakly struck. This variety was most likely struck by a different maker than the more common type 1 variety. Notwithstanding the reverse weaker strike, the medal is in extremely fine condition and on a correct replacement ribbon; the original delicate wire suspension is intact. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Items will be shipped USPS First Class Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
