The pair rolled out in December 1938, and were delivered to UP in April 1939. It took over three years to build these extremely complex machines at the GE plant in Erie, PA at a cost of around $2,000,000. They were the first turbine-electric locomotives built in America. The 2-C+C-2’s were rated at 2,500 hp each, designed to run as a pair, and capable of speeds up to 125 MPH. The trailing unit was always coupled nose-forward as they could not be MU’d back-to-back because of the layout of their innards. After several trial trips made over the New York Central, they left Erie works April 1st, 1939 for Omaha, NE for the Union Pacific where they were to be used to pull streamlined passenger trains. UP ran them on a few test trips then sent them around the country on a publicity tour. They were only "operational" for six months before being returned to GE in late 1939. They did work for the GN and NYC in 1943 during the motive power shortage during WWII but it was deemed that they’d be more useful as raw material for the war effort, so were scrapped by GE in 1943. These were the only two condensing steam locomotives built and operated in North America. While they actually were engineering triumphs, they were impractical and thus considered failures. 550 different Limited Edition railroad art prints by Andy available now at fixed prices.
