Description: I would like to offer an exceedingly rare original unpublished carte de visite of Confederate Brigadier General John Tyler Morgan from the great state of Alabama. This carte exhibits the choice photographer's imprint of J. W. Clary & Company / Selma, Alabama. Morgan lived in Selma before and after the Civil War. Judging by Morgan's youthful appearance, I believe this to be a prewar view. This image is straight out of the woods...it was originally part of an indiscriminate grouping of civilian cdvs with Alabama photographer backmarks. This is the only cdv of John Tyler Morgan I have encountered in 40+ years of collecting Confederate memorabilia. A fire-eating proponent of Southern rights, Morgan volunteered for duty in the Confederate army by enlisting as a private in Company F ("Cahaba Rifles") of the Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment at the outbreak of the War Between the States. Elevated to the rank of lieutenant colonel, Morgan soon "saw the elephant" when his regiment was transferred to Virginia. Independently-minded, Morgan would resign his commission with the 5th Alabama and return home to recruit the 51st Regiment, Alabama Partisan Rangers. Following distinguished cavalry service with Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Morgan was appointed to a brigadier generalship and assigned to Lieutenant General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corps. In the aftermath of the War, General Morgan trekked back to his home in Selma and delved into politics. This photograph has been housed in a smoke free, pet free home. Please ask all questions beforehand. Thank you very much for your interest.
