Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a very unusual original oil painting on canvas from 1944 in a hand carved frame. I do not have a lot of information about it but it is European and I believe it was painted in Germany or the Netherlands. It had belonged to my father and hung in his study at home for as long as I can remember. My father had gotten it from his older brother when he was a teenager and it was among the few things he brought with him when he moved from Germany to California right after WW2. His brother did not live, I never knew him but supposedly he was very involved with the art scene in Dusseldorf and Rotterdam in the late 1920’s & 30’s before the time of “degenerate art” & the Nazi regime. This painting is from 1944 so he would have had been conscripted by then so I’m not sure exactly how this came into his possession and I could never get my father to give me any information on why he kept it and brought it to America (he was always very silent about that difficult time). I do know that the painting has always been in this frame which was carved for it apparently. I could never decide exactly what I thought the artist’s last name is, as it is unclear. I always meant to do some research and find out but now I have moved on to other pursuits and just never had the time. In any event, it’s a strange painting as it appears to be an orientalist type of theme with a group of women in white burqas but the style of painting of the background terraces in this street scene (Egypt maybe) takes on an almost cubist dimension. All very interesting. The artists name is Paul with a last name starting with P or R, I have never been able to decipher but always felt it was a listed, known artist. The painting w/ hand carved frame measures 16” x 11 ½” and the canvas itself is 13” x 8 ½”. The canvas is rather stiff and craquelure is extensive which you can see from photos but there is no paint chipped away or missing. Painting is sold as is so please review photos and ask any questions you may have. Thank you.
