When student numbers did not recover after the Civil War, the university was forced to close during Reconstruction from December 1, 1870 until September 6, 1875. In both teaching and research, UNC has been highly ranked. UNC has a strong history in athletics. UNC's sprawling and landscaped 729-acre campus is dominated by two central quads: Polk Place and McCorkle Place. The university's teams are nicknamed the "Tar Heels," in reference to the state's eighteenth century prominence as a tar and pitch producer. The South's Oldest Rivalry between North Carolina and its first opponent, the University of Virginia, was prominent throughout much of the twentieth century.
