Landers and Josiah Dewey entered into a partnership named Dewey and Landers, which manufactured various metal products. Eventually, the company was reorganized as Landers, Frary & Clark in 1862. Landers, Frary & Clark bought Meriden Cutlery Co in 1866 and continued to use its trademark. The firm produced a variety of household products and appliances, including many electric appliances. Silver overlay is a process of applying a thick layer of sterling silver to nickel silver at the wear points on flatware. This plating is thicker than usual silver-plating. Sterling overlay is more expensive than plated but still less than sterling silver. Holmes & Edwards acquired the invention patents of William A. Warner of Syracuse for a technique of inlaying blocks of sterling silver at the WEAR POINTS on the back of spoons and forks prior to plating them.Warner went to work for Holmes & Edwards and his patents (December 9, 1884 and March 2, 1886) brought to the firm a gold medal at the Columbian Exposition in 1893 and a prominent place in silverplate industry. The trademark "SILVER INLAID" was changed to "HOLMES & EDWARDS DEEPSILVER" and in 1960 to "INTERNATIONAL DEEPSILVER". And these terms were Trademarked and so unavailable to other silverplate manufacturers. So new terms for the same process appeared like Overlaid, Reinforced, etc Silver-plated flatware, unlike sterling silver, has no intrinsic value. However, it does have some market value to flatware collectors, as long as the silver plating hasn’t worn through, and to people who seek to fill out incomplete flatware sets. According to the Silver Season website, more than 2,000 different silver-plated flatware patterns were produced from the 1850s to the 1950s, on more than 200 different types of eating and serving utensils. Certain makers’ marks denote better quality, including Gorham, Towle, Oneida Community and 1847 Rogers Bros. The Society of American Silversmiths advises the best way to preserve your silver plate is to prevent tarnish and corrosion. Silver-plated flatware should be washed by hand with a non-lemon-scented, phosphate-free dish detergent and dried immediately with a soft dish towel. Never wash silver-plated flatware in a dishwasher, according to the Society of American Silversmiths, because the high heat and harsh detergents can damage the thin plating and loosen knife handles or non-metal components of the flatware. Also, pepper and salt corrode silver plating, so shakers should be emptied, washed and dried before storing.
