How to Measure Required Steering Column Length in Three Easy Steps Your steering column length will not always be identical to the factory column due to several factors, including seating position, steering linkage connection (converting from a gear box to a rack-and-pinion for example), and other factors. For that very reason we highly recommend you measure your specific application for the best fitment. Start with your dash/gauge cluster installed and your seating position confirmed so that you can determine proper steering wheel placement. Consider having your steering wheel of choice in hand as well for even more accurate measuring. New column Turn signal switch had broken piece in it that did not allow the self cancel feature to work. Speedway sent new replacement switch which was a better quality item. Had to pull column to install new harness and switch. Had a lot of problems pulling new wiring harness through the column even though we followed the instructions on the Flaming River video "How To". Had to add a 1/4 in. spacer under the cancel cam. Works like it is supposed to now. Probably would have been easier to just return entire column and exchange for replacement column. I moved the wiring harness up toward the steering wheel to get it more hidden from view. I also had to do a minor mod on the lower tube to get sufficient clearance to the cylinder head.
