This is original signage from its expanded store opening in 1939 in which it took up nearly a city block in downtown Richmond VA as one of the largest department stores in the south. Located in Richmond, VA the Capital of the South as a large merchant store opening in 1842 it expanded and launched into a full blown Southern US department store chain in 1939. In the past Department Stores had their on printing ad facility and display making departments. Printers and Skilled Craftsmen just like Hollywood sets were designed made everything internally in their marketing ad department for all their locations. Richmond VA was the center production hub flagship store for the Thalhimers stores throughout the south. Each sign and hanging background ad in the stores were unique to the store location. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the chain at its peak operated dozens of stores in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and one store in Memphis, Tennessee. Thalhimers traditions were most notable during the holiday season with visits from the sticker-distributing Snow Bear and Santa Land, in later years, the arrival of Lego Land at the downtown Richmond store.An expansion addition to Thalhimers six-story flagship store at Seventh and Broad Streets was built in 1939. Its sporting goods department was one of the largest in Central Virginia and had catered to clients since the mid 1800's In February 1992, Thalhimers was merged into The Hecht Company (May's Washington, DC division), and nearly all locations were re-branded as Hecht's, excluding the two Charleston, SC stores and the Memphis, TN store which were sold to Dillard's, and the store at Lynnhaven Mall, which remained open as Thalhimers until May 1992. The Lynnhaven store became a second Hecht's location in November of that year.Today copies of 3D wall hangings are cut by lasers and are glued together instead of being cut by a single wooden plank. Originals from the 19th and 20th century are much harder to find. Hand carved 3D signage is a thing of the past and brings a light to the time period when manual creation without automation ruled the ad agencies.
