Specimen Background information: Calcite in general belongs to the calcite group of minerals and are composed of calcium carbonate, sometimes with impurities of iron, magnesium, or manganese, and occasionally zinc and cobalt. They occur in a great variety of shapes and colors, and often constitute a major portion of many of the earth's rocks. Colors range from colorless to white, yellow, brown, orange, pink, red, purple, blue, green, gray, black or even multicolored. The calcite crystals can be transparent to opaque. Crystals may be tabular, acicular, prismatic, flaky, and needle-like. May occur as bundles of scalenohedrons, intergrown rhombohedrons as with this featured specimen, or they can be hair-like masses of acicular crystals, grainy, stalactitic, fibrous, massive, and earthy. Scalenohedral twinning is common. Calcite is derived from the German Calcit, a term coined in the 19th century from the Latin word for lime, calx (genitive calcis) with the suffix -ite used to name minerals. Hematite is composed of iron oxide and they occur in colors of black, gray to silver gray, even brown to reddish brown and red. Their formation habits could vary from thin plates, as well as bundles of small micaceous plates to massive, botryoidal, reniform, stalactitic and radiating. Scalenohedral and rhombohedral crystals occur, as well as tabular and groups of tabular crystals. The Hematite inclusions in this featured specimen is the cause of the orange color of the Calcites.
