The book has been reprinted many times. John Edmund Brewton (1898-1982) was a prolific American author. In the book’s warm “Foreword” he tells how this collection came to be, a collection of most-loved animal poems that he and his daughter found and enjoyed in her early years. It includes hundreds of poems, short and longer, featuring almost all of the animal kingdoms and even some of those imaginary. Authors include Emily Dickinson, Carl Sandburg, Robert Lewis Stevenson, Lewis Carroll, Vachel Lindsay, and dozens more. Robert Lawson (1892-1957) provided the drawings for this book. He was an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books. His wife, Marie Abrams (1893-1956), was also an artist and illustrator. Condition of the book is “good” or a bit better: boards and spine are straight and square; binding is solid, with everything securely intact; some exterior wear and discoloration, but not bad; small tear at the gutter, title page.
