Description: On offer, we have "Tuko-See-Mathla, A Seminole Chief" hand colored lithograph portrait. This is from McKenney and Hall's three volume work "Indian Tribes Of North America" printed in 1843. The books were published by Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, Philadelphia. The prints were drawn, printed and hand colored at the Lithographic & Print Colouring Establishment, Philadelphia. The lithographs in the books were based on paintings by Charles Bird King. The War Department employed King to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington, forming the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian. The McKenney and Hall published lithographs are the only remaining likenesses of many of the most prominent 19th century Native American leaders. This lithograph details the Seminole Chief Tuko-See-Mathla in traditional attire holding his rifle. It measures 10 3/8" X 6 3/4". About the subject" "Tuko-See-Mathla, also known as John Hicks, was an influential Native American Leader elected head of his tribe in an election supposedly rigged by U.S. agents. He opposed U.S. slave raids into Florida, separate schools for Indians and efforts to move Seminoles from their land. Despite his efforts, he eventually moved back to Alabama and was murdered by tribesman who opposed U.S. policies. We consider this in very good antique condition. The image is clean and clear. The paper has toning and age spots. It has been handled and has a few light wrinkles. This page from the book has been cut and the bottom Publishing data is mostly cut off.. It has wear on the edges, especially along the top and is a bit ruffled on the left corners. As I am not an expert on art, please see my photographs for more description. This is from my friend who collects everything and is starting to part with a few of his treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping.
