Description: PLEASE NOTE: These are seeds for planting and growing! Tropic Sun is one of only a few varieties of Sunn Hemp (Crotalaria juncea) that you can grow, that is known to be non-toxic and can be fed to tortoises, turtles, iguanas, poultry, rabbits, goats, cattle, general livestock (except for horses due to its high protein content), and wildlife. The foliage is very nutritious being up to 30% protein. Animals love it! As a natural fertilizer, it is also useful to increase nitrogen and the organic content of the soil and to suppress weeds and root nematodes. Tropic Sun grows rapidly and can be grown in pots or directly in the ground. You can begin harvesting leaves in 3 to 4 weeks and continue for several months. If grown in containers we recommend planting only 5 seeds in a one-gallon pot. If you use larger or smaller pots, increase or decrease seeding rate accordingly. The plants can reach 15 feet in height, but can be pruned or pinched off to develop bushy growth for even more foliage production. It can also be grown for its beautiful yellow flowers. For soil improvement or as a fertilizer, chop or mow down at 60 days and till into the soil.We grow our seed in South Texas from original organic seed stock from Hawaii. In South Texas Tropic Sun starts to flower in late summer and fall, continuing to bloom and set seed pods through the winter and into spring. It requires short day lengths to initiate flowering. On the USA mainland, Tropic Sun will only reliably produce seed in tropical latitudes like South Texas and South Florida. Our other non-toxic Sunn Hemp variety, which we call 'Tropic Moon', is a dwarf variety (about 5 feet tall), not day-length sensitive, and will begin blooming and setting seed pods in as little as 5-6 weeks after planting. Tropic Moon seed originated in Brazil but is grown here in the USA. Tropic Moon is probably better suited to growing in large containers due to its short stature.
