Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Tribute to British Steam by Ian Allen picture book Soft Cover Tribute to British Steam by Ian Allen picture book Soft cover stapled This collection of fine colour pictures of British steam locomotives has been assembled to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the world's first public-service railway intended from the outset to be worked entirely by steam locomotives. Most of the pictures reproduced here have been published before, but never before has it been possible to offer in a single low-priced publication such a wealth of colour studies, spanning nearly 150 years of British steam locomotives at work. In fact, of course, steam on Britain's standard-gauge public railways did not quite survive the 150 years, steam operation having ended - officially at any rate - in 1968. Nor were the Stockton & Darlington's services worked exclusively by steam from the railway's inception in 1825. Moreover, steam locomotives had been in existence and performing useful work at least since 1812, after Trevithick's demonstration of 1804 had proved their practicability. Spurred on by the successes of Trevithick and Hedley, George Stephenson entered the scene, cut his teeth at Killingworth, and found the backing to design the 22-mile line between Shildon and Stockton for steam locomotive operation; 'Here in 1825', the commemorative tablet on the building in Stockton reads, 'the Stockton & Darlington Railway Company booked the first passenger thus marking an epoch in the history of mankind'. Although in 1825 the S&D opened to the sort of mixed reception that a new airport or motorway receives today -enthusiasm from the planners and protest from the environmentalists-it started a wave of railway building the world over, and steam power developed on the basic Stephenson formula remained paramount for well over a century. Now steam's day is done nearly everywhere but in Britain at least we are fortunate in the dedicated work of restoration and research by the preservation societies; without them, and the equally dedicated painters and photographers who have so inspiringly captured the essence of their subjects, this tribute would have been considerably less colorful and considerably less comprehensive.
