Description: In the spring of 1985 Trans World Airways announced that it would inaugurate service in mid-November to nine new Caribbean points from its New York and St. Louis hubs. In July the airline decided to postpone service indefinitely to any points except Freeport, Nassau and San Juan. “The continuing unresolved problems of high operating costs” were cited as the reason. The six destinations dropped were St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Antigua, Martinique and Guadeloupe.The USPS announcement stated that the inaugural service from New York to Nassau and from Saint Louis to Freeport would occur on November 15, 1985 while the inaugurals from New York to Freeport and Saint Louis to Nassau would occur on November 16, 1985. The Saint Louis inaugural actually occurred on November 16, 1985 and covers are so postmarked. A Boeing 727 flew nonstop to Freeport, then to Nassau and returned to Saint Louis. This cover was carried on the inaugural TWA flight from Saint Louis, Missouri to Freeport, Bahamas (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as TW-F97a.
