Shao Kuang Ting Born: 1939 - Chenggu, China Name variants: Ting Shao Kuang, Shaoguang Ting Ting Shao Kuang is a prominent contemporary Chinese painter and sculptor. He is known for his works characterized by traditional Chinese painting techniques combined with more expressive Western art forms. Ting Shao Kuang was born in Chenggu, China in 1939. The year he was born, this area was ravaged by the Sino-Japanese war. Two years later his parents fled to Taiwan, leaving Ting behind in Beijing with his grandparents who were suffering greatly from the poverty inflicted upon them by the government. Ting turned to painting and by age 11 was painting every day with cooking oil as a medium for his pigment. Despite his dire situation, he exhibited such remarkable talent that in 1954 he was invited to attend a prestigious high school affiliated with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1957, Ting was accepted at Beijing's Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, where he was inspired by the works of Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani and graduated with honors. Ting taught at the Yunnan Art Institute in Kunming, where he painted in abstract style at night, only to burn the paintings in the mornings to avoid the condemnation of the authorities. Due to his modernistic view, he was suspended from his job and eventually fled Kunming, escaping to the Buddhist monasteries of Gansu, where he studied the ancient sculptures and then moved to Dunhuang where he studied the painting preserved on the walls of over 400 caves. In 1968, Ting returned to Kunming and after Mao died in 1976, art classes finally resumed and Ting and four other artists who shared his artistic views formed the Yunnan Shen She Art Association and three years later they exhibited at the First International Art Show in Hong Kong. Ting received the high honor of being commissioned to paint a mural in the Great Hall of the People. In 1980, Ting left China to reside in the United States.
