Description: For auction is a lovely squat vase made by Thomas Webb & Sons of Stourbridge, England. The vase measures approximately 2 5/8" tall and 3 3/16" in diameter at the belly or bulge of the vase. The crimped irregular rim flares out to approximately 2 1/2" in diameter opposing sides. This is a seven petal form so this measurement is not from petal tip to petal tip but from outer petal tip to inner crimp roll between the petals. Finally, the neck of the vase is 1 1/2" in diameter to allow for the flowers. The vase displays a squat sack form with a corseted neck and flared crimped rim. This shape is also known as a posy or violet vase. It is done in the ever popular Burmese décor with excellent color of pale yellow on the lower portion graduating to a deep dusty pink flared and crimped rim. This happens when the glass blower reheats the piece in the "glory hole" or oven to form the rolled over and pinched rim. The longer the piece is exposed in this manner, the deeper the rose color becomes, yet if overdone, this temperamental glass would fade back to yellow. The yellow base color is also composed with uranium in the mixture to achieve this color. The vase is finished in an acid matte finish that is quite pleasing with the contrast in color. Thomas Webb & Sons produced some of the finest Burmese glass available and this is also known as Queen's Burmese ware as it was noted for having the Queen's approval for quality. Queen Victoria visited the United States and was gifted a lovely tea set made by the Mount Washington Glass Company. Upon receiving the gift she exclaimed it reminded her of a Burmese sunset thus the name stuck with this type of glassware. The piece is signed with the acid etched mark of "THOS. WEBB & SONS" in an inner circle surrounded by another circle. The outer circle is marked "QUEENS BURMESEWARE PATENTED" although the QUE is rubbed out leaving the remaining signature. There is also a form number outside the circle that reads R12-80167 which is the shape number. The piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no chips, nicks, cracks or dings. the vase was made circa 1885-1895.
