Description: WORKS OF HENRY FIELDING, COMPLETE IN ONE VOLUME, WITH MEMOIR OF THE AUTHOR Author: Fielding, Henry, Illustrated by Thomas Cruikshank, and Memoir by Thomas Roscoe Title: WORKS OF HENRY FIELDING, COMPLETE IN ONE VOLUME, WITH MEMOIR OF THE AUTHOR Publication: London, England: Henry G. Bohn, 1849 Description: Hardcover. Quarto. Thick and hefty (9 1/2 i. x 6 1/4 in. x 3 in.) cloth over boards, with gilt lettering to spine, and double-ruled in gilt at top and bottom of spine. Very sturdily rebinding of this, the so-called "Roscoe (One-Volume) Edition" of Fielding's works. Over one-thousand pages -- 1116 in fact. 22 marvelous Cruikshank illustrations. Scattered light foxing, predominately to thicker paper upon which plates are printed, but mercifully, almost all restricted to margins thereof. Two column text, quite readable, and surprisingly for such a monster tome, the book stays open at will. Good Plus. Former PRIVATE library copy with numerous indications thereunto: A torn label to bottom of spine, insignia stamp to front and rear boards, all endpapers verso of Samuel Freeman frontis engraving of Fielding (with his inked signature and upon a printed bookplate to front pastedown.Given the number of ownership identifiers in this copy of Henry Fielding's works, it was worth a brief investigation as to the identity of the previous owner and gleesome rubber-stamper. Upon discovering that this territorial and prolific defacer was, in fact, a LIBRARIAN (!!), it seemed important to learn a bit more, since he was considered a leader in, and inspiration to that profession, one which in some circles is considered notorious for savagely defacing beautiful books and documents, in the sometime deluded name of the commonweal. That said, let it also be said that Mr. Louis Shores probably LOVED this copy of Fielding's works and did not want it to walk away, either through loan, loss, or theft. Yes, now, to be certain, I know to whom this book belonged! (And Mr. Shores SIGNED this book, as well!)“Louis Shores (1904-1981) (Born Louis Steinberg) was one of the undisputed intellectual leaders of librarianship in the 1960s. By that time, Shores had already established a national reputation in the field of reference work and had become prominent in education for librarianship. His lifelong commitment to his profession centered around his intense belief in the power of libraries to enhance the lives of their patrons; Shores insisted that libraries mattered only to the degree that they connected with people and touched their lives. With the zeal of a true believer, he fought to incorporate teaching functions into librarianship and create programs of library education and training. This biography provides an account of Shores's life, and the complex character and career of this librarian, poet, social activist, and maverick educator. As a librarian and library educator, Shores' contributions were numerous, though largely unrecognized by official markers. Shores served as the head of two library schools, at Peabody College and Florida State University, and was responsible for the establishment of what is now the Reference and Adult Services Division of the American Library Association. Includes a subject index.” (from a Scarecrow Press title: “Louis Shores: Defining Educational Librarianship by Lee Shiflett).
