There are some scuffs here and there and there is shelf wear around the edges, but the binding is tight, there are no loose or missing pages and no marks or stains were observed anywhere in the book (which is exceptional for a cookbook). From the front flyleaf, "The Netherlands Antilles are a collection of six islands geographically divided into two groups and widely separated by the Caribbean Sea. Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire comprise the southern cluster, or Leeward Islands, which are located just north of the Venezuelan coast. "A trio of smaller islands, Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius, forms the northern or Windward group islands. English is most commonly spoken in the Windward group, but the southern islanders are usually tri- or quadri-lingual. They speak Dutch, English, and Spanish, as well as Papiamento, the local lilting tongue which evolved from numerous European languages and African dialects. "Like Papiamento, the cuisine of the Leeward Islands represents a mingling of diverse cultures. The zest and tang of Southern dishes came with the Sephardic Jews from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. The Dutch brought the exotica of Indonesia, as well as their own hearty, robust cooking. The piquancy of West Africa is also there. In general, the recipes with Papiamento titles are exclusive to these islands. "The Windward dishes are listed in English and many reflect the Leeward cultural influences; however, their black-eyed peas, peanuts, sweet potatoes, and pigs' tails bring to mind traditional cooking in the southern United States."
